Academic Growth and Faculty Professional Development

The mission for the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology is to develop and sustain high impact research programs in cell and developmental biology, provide an outstanding training environment for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, and deliver a superb educational product for medical students.

To accomplish these objectives, the Department is committed to faculty development in all three areas of academics: research, teaching, and service. Much of the mentoring provided to young faculty occurs through a NIH/NIGMS Center of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) grant that has a research emphasis on molecular regulation of cell development and differentiation. This Center provides faculty with regular reviews of their research progress by internal and external scientists and it also supports a vibrant seminar series and an annual research symposium.  Additionally, each faculty member at all ranks undergoes a rigorous annual performance evaluation by the Chair, which is reviewed by the leadership team in the School of Medicine. Assistant and Associate Professors are also reviewed regularly by the Departmental Promotion and Tenure Committee.

The KUMC Research Institute (KUMCRI) assists and supports faculty and all research with all facets of grants from application through coordination of grant award management. In addition they provide a Calendar of Events and Deadlines for training and staying updated on all things related to grants. One additional service to faculty on campus is the Department of Biostatistics & Data Science who provides an infrastructure of biostatistical and informatics expertise to support and enhance the research, service, and educational needs of the University of Kansas Medical Center and its affiliates, along with and our faculty members. They too, offer a list of Seminars and Lectures to assist with training faculty.

Evaluation of teaching skills is largely monitored by the Director of Graduate Studies (currently Dr. Peggy Petroff), Director of Medical Education (Dr. George Enders), module directors of the several preclinical medical education modules that the Department participates in, as well as by Dr. Robert Klein (Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Dean of Graduate Studies, Associate Dean for Professional Development and Faculty Affairs, and Professor of Anatomy & Cell Biology).  The School of Medicine Faculty Affairs and Faculty Development office, the Office of Medical Education, and the Faculty Leadership Academy provide seminars, workshops, retreats, and other resources that are designed to improved teaching skills and advice on professional development.
