Epidural Spinal Cord Stimulation for Hypertension in Patients with Neuropathic Pain (ESCAPE study)

PI: Seth W. Holwerda, PhD

We are inviting you to participate in this research study because you may be planning to undergo a surgery for a spinal cord stimulator to help chronic pain.

The purpose of this research study is to evaluate changes in pain and any potential changes in blood pressure after undergoing implantation of a spinal cord simulator device.

This research ESCAPE study involves

  • 4 visits to our KU Clinical Research Center, conveniently located 3.4 miles south of KUMC. Visits are coordinated to coincide with your normally scheduled visits related to your spinal cord stimulator device at KUMC.
  • Free parking next to the front door of the KU Clinical Research Center, 4350 Shawnee Mission Parkway 3rd floor, Fairway, KS 66205.
  • Each study visit includes measurements of blood pressure, a neck ultrasound, and a blood draw (~30 min per visit).
  • Compensation for your participation is provided.

Improving pain management via spinal cord stimulation and blood pressure reduction (PASSION study)

PI: Seth W. Holwerda, PhD

We are inviting you to participate in this research study because you are currently using a spinal cord stimulation device to manage your chronic pain.

The purpose of this study is to monitor symptoms of chronic pain before and after 4 weeks of a standard drug commonly used to treat elevated blood pressure so that we may better understand how blood pressure affects your level of pain. This study is not testing an experimental drug.

This research PASSION study is approximately 6 weeks long and involves:

• 5 visits to our KU Clinical Research Center, conveniently located 3.4 miles south of KUMC.
• Free parking next to the front door of the KU Clinical Research Center, 4350 Shawnee Mission Parkway 3rd floor, Fairway, KS 66205.
• Monitoring of your heart rate, blood pressure, and blood chemistries (this study does include several blood draws)
• Compensation for your participation is provided
