In honor of the outstanding contributions made by Dr. Benson over his 40+ year career to the University of Kansas, The University of Kansas Health System, and the field of Anesthesiology, the Kirk T. Benson, M.D. Professorship will provide perpetual support to the KU Department of Anesthesiology to advance simulation education and professional mentorship, as well as name a Kirk Benson Professor who will carry on Dr. Benson's legacy of leadership.

Once fully-funded, the Professorship will be a resource for collaborative educational and training programs that will benefit both the educational mission of the University of Kansas as well as the clinical mission of The University of Kansas Health System.

1980 - Resident of KU Anesthesiology


1981 - Elected Chief Resident of Anesthesiology


1982 - Became an Anesthesiology faculty member at KU


1992 - Elected into the Academy of Anesthesiology


1994 - Appointed Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology


2001 - Became President of Academy of Anesthesiology


2005 - KUPI President and Senior Associate Dean of Clinical Affairs at the Health System


2011 - KUMC Faculty Award- The Glendon G. Cox Leadership Award


2019 - Received "The Legacy Award" from TUKHS

Leaving a Legacy

From medical student to Chief Resident, Anesthesiology Department faculty member to Chair, Dr. Kirk T. Benson has brought integrity, mentorship, and an innovative spirit to everything he has done at the University of Kansas Medical Center and The University of Kansas Health System.

Dr. Benson brought the first High Fidelity Human Patient Simulator to the Medical Center campus in 1996, paving the way for the world-class simulation and mixed-reality learning environment available today to KU students, residents and physicians. Dr. Benson also developed and instituted the Mentorship Program and the Leadership & Professional Development Program for the Department of Anesthesiology, formalizing and preserving his commitment to supporting the next generation of physicians.
