Valerie A. French, MD
Obstetrics and Gynecology/Family Planning
Residency: University of Nebraska Medical Center
Fellowship: University of California, San Fransisco
Dr. French has dedicated her career to improving family planning access for women in the Midwest. She attended medical school at the University of Missouri, Columbia and completed an obstetrics and gynecology residency at the University of Nebraska. While a resident, she worked on creating a family planning curriculum for her fellow residents. Her resident research explored how patients get information on contraception from non-Ob-Gyn providers. Dr. French then completed a family planning fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco, where she earned a masters in advanced science to gain additional research training. She also served as the medical director for a teen contraception clinic during fellowship, one of few where women and teens could access same day copper IUDs as emergency contraception. As a fellow, she researched referral for abortion services and what women want from pregnancy options counseling. Dr. French hopes that by better understanding referral and women's desires around pregnancy options counseling, access to family planning services may be improved.
Dr. French is interested in integrating quality contraceptive counseling into the care of women with complex medical conditions. She enjoys teaching medical students and residents, particularly with hands-on workshops. She plans to expand family planning care at the University of Kansas, including office management of miscarriage and dedicated teen contraception services. As a native Midwesterner, she is delighted to serve the women of the Kansas City area and truly feels at home in the heart of the Midwest.
